The school of Hygiene was established in 1933 by the Sudan Medical Science to train medical health officials who were charged with monitoring environmental health and assisted in control and prevention of epidemic and endemic diseases. The teaching staff was British. The students were awarded Diploma in Public Health from accredited British institutions. In 1973 and within the framework of the general policy of Higher Education, the School of Hygiene became an autonomous of evaluation on the part of the World Health Organization, whereby the syllabuses were revised and the duration of the study course was increased to four years in 1982, after which students were to be awarded the Diploma of Public Health from the Institute itself.
